THE STUDENTS AS OCEANOGRAPHERS

SUMMARY

The Science is first of all "open" to the “world”.The “world” includes both the natural world and everything that Man has created (technological applications) as a unity and in every aspect. It is also a scientific process in which creation and communication are shuffled. The students get prepared to study the Saronic Gulf in a global and overall continue process.

WORKING In 4-5 phases:

1. Preparation in school: Creation of student’s subgroups, Selection of the study fields, Research for relevant sources of information, Construction and preparation of small equipments

2. Preparing the visit to the sea: Organize the visiting points on the region map, Model construction of the depth sea background, Creation of the work-papers and calendars in each subgroup, Practice in the use of appropriate instruments, Each subgroup has its reporter and a specialist responsible for the measurements

3.In situ measurements: Selecting water in bottles as well as algae and recognize them and also to gather benthos samples, Performing measurements (temperature, transparency, pH, salinity and density of the water), Discussions with people near the place that the students have visited in order to complete questionnaires, Visit local authorities and industrial zones and ask about the environmental problems, Complete questionnaires with local fishermen and to discover and mark the Environment   pollution sources in general, Visit the historical and cultural monuments near the visited places

4. Back to the School: Each subgroup of students organizes its measurements, Analyses them in the laboratories (Science, ICT), Analyses the questionnaires and prepares diagrams, Puts and conserves the algae, Water and benthos.

5. The subgroups finally come all together in a large group: The subgroups present their results to the others, They create common conclusions, posts and presentations using their resultsThey discuss and evaluate their work (evaluation and self-evaluation), They present their work to their schoolmates and to the students of others schools and local authorities. They ask the responsible authorities to take care the Environment according to their results

Working   in groups and sub-groups with the students, set a universal issue (in integrated framework) and some direct objectives. Using the opportunity to work in a group and change into sub groups, developing the communication, the cooperation among the students. The students develop their self esteem. Learning in an approach of different aspects of the issue (Science, social, historical, Health etc.). There is an overall process and also we can use  the critical evaluation and self-evaluation
